What is dental bonding?

Dental bonding is a common dental procedure that is considered to be the simplest, most convenient and valuable ways to restore a tooth’s appearance and strength. If crowns or veneers that are often expensive and time-consuming to produce are not good options for you, dental bonding is an excellent alternative to acheive great function and esthetics.

The procedure is called dental bonding because the composite resin that is used “literally” bonds “with the tooth” to fill in any gaps, cracks or damages. The procedure is called dental bonding because the composite resin that is used bonds directly to the tooth to fill in any gaps, cracks or damages.

After the resin has hardened over your tooth, the dentist may have to smooth, shape and polish it in order to allow the newly-treated tooth to blend in with the rest of your teeth.

Even if a different material is layered over the tooth to restore it to its natural structure, the resin can be polished to conform to the appearance and color of the surrounding teeth. At Dental Care of Nixa, we use a composite shade guide to choose the composite that is the same color as your natural teeth color.

Dental bonding can also be used close the gap between teeth or to make teeth look longer or wider. However, apart from the obvious cosmetic advantages of the procedure, it can also be used to protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when the gums recede. Dental bonding can also be an alternative to amalgam fillings.
